For example, when first graders enter a bilingual class, they receive content instruction in their home language (math, science, reading, writing, social studies) while getting intensive English instruction every day to bring their comprehension up to a level where their primary language of instruction can switch to English. In the meantime, they will not have fallen behind academically, since all of the skills and knowledge they acquire are easily transferable to English once their language proficiency is strong. The advantage of bilingual education is that children become truly bilingual and biliterate. They do not have to throw one treasure away in order to gain a different treasure. And by the time they reach fifth or sixth grade, they routinely outscore their monolingual counterparts on achievement tests in English, since the extra effort they have poured into learning a second (or in many cases third) language tends to develop higher level thinking skills.
